Coffee Roaster's Tips for Brewing Delicious Coffee at Home
We received a question from a customer who purchased TAISETSU coffee beans, asking, "What can I do to make delicious coffee at home?" In response, Carl Wilcock, the owner and coffee roaster, will introduce tips for brewing delicious coffee at home.
There are three important points:
- Use fresh beans or ground coffee
- Don't skimp on choosing a coffee mill (coffee grinder)
- Find the taste that suits your preference
Let's take a look at each point.
- Use fresh beans or ground coffee The quality of the ingredients is crucial for coffee as well. Ideally, use beans within one month of roasting. Dark roasted beans can be enjoyed the day after roasting, but light roasted beans taste better after 1 week to 10 days.
This is related to the gas (carbon dioxide) contained in the beans when roasted. Brewing coffee involves extracting flavors by making contact between the coffee beans and water. If too much gas is present, it can interfere with the contact between beans and water, resulting in less delicious coffee.
Dark roasted beans release excess gas during roasting, while light roasted beans release the remaining gas over a week. Hence, it is said that light roasted beans taste better after some time. However, if left for too long, the freshness will be lost, so "finish within one month" is a good guideline.
- Don't skimp on choosing a coffee mill The quality of the coffee mill is arguably the most crucial factor. No matter how delicious the beans are, if the mill is of poor quality or not suitable for the brewing method, the beans' potential will not be fully realized. Carl's recommended coffee mills are:
- Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder
- HARIO V60 Electric Coffee Grinder Compact EVC-8B
- Find the taste that suits your preference (tasting) Coffee is a matter of personal preference. The desired taste varies depending on the individual and their mood or physical condition at the time. When trying new beans or equipment, experiment with brewing several times to find your preferred taste.
In general, when trying new beans at a coffee shop, it is said that more than 1kg of beans is used for tasting. It might be challenging to do this at home, so consider enjoying the process of brewing different coffees for tasting purposes.
In this article, we introduced tips for brewing delicious coffee at home. To try various tastes and use fresh beans, it is recommended to purchase small quantities at a time.
