雪原にキタキツネが横向きに座り、日の落ちる方角をじっと見ています。空はピンクから薄紫へ移っていき、低い位置に白い太陽がひとつ。雪も空の色を受けて淡く染まり、足もとには枯れ草が数本だけ突き出ています。厚い冬毛が輪郭をやわらかくしている、冬の夕暮れの一枚です。
キタキツネのこと
- 冬毛は淡く白っぽくなり、体つきがひと回り大きく見えます。この写真でも首から背中にかけての毛が厚く立っています。
- 尾はふさふさと長く、座ったときに体のうしろへ流れます。ここでも雪の上に長く伸びています。
- 夕方から夜にかけて活動が活発になるため、この時間帯に姿を見かけることがよくあります。
- 雪の下のネズミを主な獲物にしていて、開けた雪原は狩り場のひとつです。

A fox sits in profile on an open snowfield, watching the low sun. The sky runs from pink to pale violet, the sun is a small white disc just above the horizon, and the snow takes the same colours. A few dry grass stems break the surface beside it.
Its winter coat is pale and thick, heavy through the neck and shoulders, and the long tail lies out behind it on the snow.
Hokkaido foxes grow this coat for the cold months, and they become most active towards dusk — which is when you are most likely to meet one out on open ground like this, listening for voles under the snow.
