仲良しエゾモモンガ (079)
この一枚について
雪のついた木の幹から張り出した細い枝に、エゾモモンガが2匹並んでいます。1匹は幹側で前足を胸の前にそろえ、もう1匹は枝の上に体を横たえるようにして寄り添っています。どちらも大きな黒い目でこちらを見ていて、背景の枝には雪が残り、光は白く曇っています。真冬の森の一場面です。
エゾモモンガのこと
- 顔の大半を占めるほど目が大きいのは、暗い時間に行動するためです。写真でも黒目がまん丸に見えています。
- 背中は灰色、お腹は白。この2匹も、枝にかかったお腹側だけが白く見えています。
- 前足と後ろ足の間に飛膜があり、たたんでいるときは体の横のゆるんだ毛のように見えます。
- 寒い時期は樹洞で身を寄せ合って過ごすため、こうして2匹が並ぶ姿が見られます。

Two Siberian flying squirrels share a thin branch coming off a snow-dusted trunk. One sits upright against the trunk with its paws together at its chest; the other lies along the branch beside it, pressed close. Both are looking straight at the camera.
There is snow on the bark and on the branches behind them, and the light is flat and white. Deep winter.
Those enormous black eyes are for moving around in the dark. The back is grey, the underside white — you can see it where they press against the branch. The gliding membrane runs between front and hind legs and, folded up like this, just looks like loose fur along the flank. In the cold months they huddle together in tree hollows, which is why you see pairs like this.
