細い枝に、真っ白なシマエナガが一羽とまっています。体は丸くふくらみ、背中には茶と黒の羽が差し色のように入り、長い尾が枝の上へすっと伸びています。背景は緑一色にぼけていて、葉の茂った季節の森であることがわかります。首をわずかにかしげ、こちらを見ている一瞬です。

シマエナガのこと

• 体長は尾を含めて14cmほど。写真でも、丸い体より尾のほうが長いことがよくわかります。
• 北海道のエナガは顔に眉のような黒い線が入らず、頭から顔まで白一色です。この個体もそうです。
• 細い枝先をつたい歩きながら、虫やクモをついばみます。足指で枝を握る姿がはっきり写っています。
• ふだんは小さな群れで動き、細い声で鳴き交わしながら林の中を移動していきます。

A shimaenaga — Hokkaido's long-tailed tit — sits on a bare branch, round and white, with a few brown and black feathers on the back and a long tail trailing along the branch behind it. The background is a wash of green, so this is the leafy half of the year, not the snow.

It has turned its head very slightly towards the camera. That is the whole moment.

The bird is about 14cm long including that tail, which is longer than the body itself. Hokkaido's subspecies has no dark brow line, so the head is plain white. They work along thin outer twigs picking off insects and spiders, usually in small chattering flocks.
