青みの強い水面に、立ち枯れたカラマツが何十本も突き立っています。幹も枝も雪をかぶって白く、奥の林まで一面が雪。水は青緑から明るい水色へと色を変え、長い露光で表面がなめらかにならされています。空の光は弱く、色がすべて青に寄った、真冬の静かな時間です。

青池のこと

• この池は自然にできたものではなく、美瑛川の砂防工事でできた水たまりが残ったものです。
• 水が青く見えるのは、上流から流れ込む成分が川の水と混ざって細かい粒子をつくり、光を散らすためです。
• 水中に立つカラマツは、水がたまったことで枯れたまま残った木です。写真の白い幹がそれにあたります。
• 季節と天気で青の濃さが変わります。雪をかぶった冬は、白と青だけの風景になります。

Dozens of dead larch trunks stand straight out of water that is somewhere between pale blue and deep blue-green. Every trunk and branch carries snow, and the forest behind is white from top to bottom. A long exposure has smoothed the surface flat.

The light is weak and everything in the frame has pulled towards blue. Midwinter.

The pond is not natural — it is water left behind by erosion-control works on the Biei River. Its colour comes from particles formed when water flowing in from upstream mixes with the river and scatters the light. The larches died when the water rose and were left standing where they were. In winter, with snow on them, the whole scene comes down to two colours.
