森の賢者の誕生 (080)

古い木の大きな洞の入り口に、エゾフクロウのひなが3羽かたまっています。まだ全身が灰白色の綿羽におおわれ、顔は丸く、黒い目でそろってこちらを見ています。洞のまわりの樹皮は苔むしてめくれ、背景には明るい緑の葉が透けています。森に葉の茂る季節の、巣立ち前の一場面です。
エゾフクロウのこと
- ひなの体は灰白色のやわらかな綿羽におおわれています。写真の3羽もまだ輪郭がぼんやりと丸い姿です。
- 目は黒く、顔は平らな円盤状。耳のように見える羽角はありません。
- 巣は自分で作らず、古い大木にできた洞を使います。この一枚でも、ひなたちは洞の口に並んでいます。
- 同じ巣のきょうだいは近い時期にいっしょに巣を離れ、しばらくは洞の周りで過ごします。

Three Ural owl chicks are crowded into the mouth of a hollow in an old tree. They are still covered in soft grey-white down, their faces are round flat discs, and all three are looking straight out at the camera with dark eyes.
The bark around the hollow is mossy and peeling, and bright green leaves show through behind — this is the leafy part of the year, before the young have left the nest for good.
Ezo fukurou do not build nests; they use hollows in old broadleaf trees like this one. Siblings leave within days of each other and stay near the hollow for a while afterwards. Note the plain round face and dark eyes, with no ear tufts at all.
