岩のかげから顔を出したナキウサギが、白い花に鼻先を寄せています。花は白い花びらに黄色い中心、足もとには濃い緑の葉が広がっています。夏の高い山の、明るい日ざしの一枚です。

ナキウサギのこと

• 岩の隙間をすみかにします。写真のような大きな岩の重なりが、そのまま出入り口になります。
• 耳は丸く短く、尾は外から見えません。ウサギの仲間ですが、姿はずんぐりしています。
• 草や葉、花を食べます。この一枚では、咲いている花にまっすぐ鼻先を寄せています。
• 冬眠せず、夏から秋に草を岩の下へ運んで蓄えます。花の咲くこの季節が、いちばん忙しい時期です。

A pika has come out from between the rocks and put its nose to a white flower — white petals, yellow centre, dark green leaves spreading across the stone below. High summer, high ground, hard sunlight.

Pikas live in the gaps in boulder fields; a pile like this one is both shelter and doorway. The ears are short and round and the tail doesn't show. They eat grasses, leaves and flowers, and they don't hibernate — through the flowering season they are busy hauling plants down under the rocks to keep for winter.
