真っ赤に色づいた木々の下を、キタキツネが左へ向かって歩いています。背景はナナカマドのような赤い葉と橙の枝、手前には黄色い低木と、灰色の岩を覆う赤い下草。キツネの毛色は周囲の赤と重なり、尾の先の白だけがはっきりと浮かびます。秋の盛りの山の一場面です。
キタキツネのこと
- 尾の先が白いのはキタキツネの目印です。紅葉に溶け込んだこの写真でも、そこだけが白く見えます。
- 秋には冬に備えて毛が厚みを増し、尾がとくにふさふさと太くなります。
- ネズミや小鳥のほか、秋は木の実や果実もよく食べます。実のなる時期の林を歩き回るのはそのためです。
- 森から草地、岩の多い高いところまで歩き、冬眠せず一年じゅう活動しています。

A red fox walks left through a hillside at the peak of autumn. Scarlet leaves fill the background, yellow shrubs sit at the fox's shoulder, and red ground cover spills over grey rocks in the foreground.
Its coat is almost the same colour as everything around it. The one thing that separates the animal from the hillside is the white tip of its tail.
That white tail tip is the giveaway for a Hokkaido fox. By autumn the coat has thickened for the cold to come, and the tail is at its heaviest. Foxes eat berries and fruit as well as voles and small birds at this time of year, which is exactly why one would be working through country like this. They stay active right through the winter.
