この一枚について
エゾシマリスが後ろ足で立ち上がり、細い緑の穂を前足で引き寄せて食べています。まわりは夏の草むら、右手には紫色の花が咲いています。顔の白い線と背中の縞が、草のあいだにくっきり浮かんでいます。
エゾシマリスのこと
- 顔から背にかけて黒い縞が走ります。写真でも、目のまわりの白い線と背中の縞がはっきり見えます。
- 前足で植物を引き寄せて食べます。この一枚は、穂を手で押さえて口へ運んでいるところです。
- 頬袋に食べ物をためて巣へ運びます。集めた種は、冬を越すための蓄えになります。
- 秋の終わりから春まで土の中で冬眠します。草の茂るこの季節は、体をつくる時期です。

A Siberian chipmunk is up on its hind legs, pulling a slender green seed-head down with its front paws and eating from it. Summer grass all around, purple flowers off to the right. The white line around the eye and the dark stripes on the back stand out against the green.
Chipmunks pull plants towards them and hold them to eat, exactly as here. What they don't eat goes into the cheek pouches and back to the burrow as winter store — they sleep underground from late autumn until spring, so a season of thick grass like this one is when the body gets built.
