ナキウサギが、葉のついた枝を口いっぱいにくわえて岩の上に立っています。枝は口の横にぴんと張り出し、背景は赤や橙にぼけています。丸い耳とずんぐりした体が、黒っぽい岩の上にちょこんとのっています。
ナキウサギのこと
- 冬眠しません。夏から秋にかけて草や葉を岩の隙間へ運び込み、冬の食べ物として蓄えます。写真は、その運搬の途中の姿です。
- 耳は丸く短く、尾は外から見えません。ウサギの仲間ですが、跳ぶより岩を歩きます。
- すみかは山の岩場です。写真の足もとのような大きな岩の重なりが、そのまま出入り口になります。
- 甲高い声で鳴き交わすことから「ナキウサギ」と呼ばれます。

A pika stands on a dark rock with a leafy sprig held crosswise in its mouth. The stem juts out past its whiskers. Behind it the world has gone to red and orange blur.
Pikas don't hibernate. Through summer and autumn they carry plant material into the gaps between rocks and store it for winter — this is a photograph of that work in progress. The ears are short and round, the tail invisible, and a jumble of boulders like this one is both home and front door. The name comes from the high, sharp call they use to keep track of each other.
