エゾモモンガが、針葉樹の枝先からまっすぐこちらを見ています。灰色がかった毛に、黒く大きな目。枝には雪がのこり、背景は淡い青と緑にとけています。冬の、明るい時間の一枚です。
エゾモモンガのこと
- 前足と後ろ足のあいだに飛膜があり、広げて木から木へ滑空します。写真では体の横にたたまれています。
- 目が大きいのは、暗いなかで活動するためです。この一枚でも、顔の半分近くを目が占めています。
- 冬眠しません。枝に雪がのこるこの日も、外に出てきています。
- 樹洞をすみかにし、木の芽や葉、樹皮を食べます。写真のような針葉樹の枝を伝って移動します。

A Siberian flying squirrel looks straight down the lens from the tip of a conifer branch. The coat is grey-brown, the eyes huge and black. Snow is still sitting on the needles and the background has gone to pale blue and green.
The gliding membrane that runs between front and hind legs is folded away along its flanks here. The eyes are that large because this is an animal built for low light. They don't hibernate, so a snowy branch is simply where the day happens, and they move through conifers like this one between tree hollows.
