雪をかぶった木の股に、エゾフクロウが身をおさめています。目は細く、うとうとしているように見えます。右手の背景には街灯のあかりがオレンジ色の丸になってにじみ、あかりのともる冬の時間だとわかります。

エゾフクロウのこと

• 羽角がなく、頭から顔にかけてなだらかな丸みがあります。写真でもその輪郭がよく出ています。
• 羽色が白っぽく、雪ののった幹によくなじみます。見つけにくいのは、この色のためです。
• 日中は木のうろや幹のくぼみで休みます。写真の一羽も、幹の割れ目に体を寄せています。
• 夜に活動し、ネズミなどの小動物をとらえます。目を細めたこの姿は、動き出す前の時間です。

An owl has tucked itself into the fork of a snow-topped tree, eyes narrowed almost shut. Off to the right, streetlights have blurred into three warm orange discs. It is winter, and the lamps are already on.

Ezo fukuro have no ear tufts — the head runs in one smooth curve — and their plumage is pale, which is exactly why they are so hard to pick out against a snowy trunk. They rest by day in hollows and splits in the bark like this one, and hunt small mammals after dark. This is the hour just before that.
