木のうろに、エゾフクロウのひなが二羽ならんでいます。まだ綿毛に包まれた灰白色の体で、どちらも黒い目でまっすぐこちらを見ています。うろのふちには苔がのり、背景は明るい緑です。

エゾフクロウのこと

• 耳のような羽角がなく、顔はまるい形をしています。ひなのうちから、その丸さがはっきり出ています。
• 目は黒く、顔の正面にならんでいます。写真の二羽も、そろって同じ方向を見ています。
• 大きな木のうろを巣として使います。写真のような幹の広い穴が、そのまま子育ての場になります。
• 北海道のエゾフクロウは羽色が白っぽいのが特徴です。ひなの綿毛も、ほとんど白に近い灰色です。

Two owlets sit side by side in a hollow in a tree trunk. They are still in down — grey-white, soft-edged — and both are looking straight out, dark-eyed. Moss runs along the lip of the hollow and the background is bright green.

Ezo fukuro have no ear tufts, and the round face is there from the start. A wide hollow like this one is the nest itself. The Hokkaido birds are paler than their counterparts further south, and on a chick that comes out as a grey so light it is nearly white.
