この一枚について

木の枝の上で、二羽のエゾフクロウが体を寄せ合って休んでいます。左の一羽は正面を向いたまま目を閉じ、もう一羽はその顔にそっと頭をあずけています。まわりの葉はまだ緑を残していて、昼下がりの明るい光のなかで撮られた一枚です。

エゾフクロウのこと

• 北海道に暮らすフクロウで、本州のものにくらべて羽の色がずっと白っぽい。
• 耳のような羽角はなく、まるい顔立ちと黒い瞳が特徴。
• 夜行性のため、日中は木の枝や木のうろで身を寄せて休んでいる。
• つがいは一年を通して同じ森で暮らし、こうして並んで眠る姿が見られる。

Two Ezo owls rest side by side on a branch. One faces forward with its eyes closed; the other leans its head gently against its companion's cheek. The leaves around them are still green, and the light is that of the middle of the day.

The Ezo owl is Hokkaido's own form of the Ural owl — paler than those found further south, with a round face, dark eyes and no ear tufts. A pair will hold the same patch of forest all year, and they often roost pressed together like this.
