ハイマツの枝のあいだに、赤い羽色のギンザンマシコのオスがとまっています。太く短いくちばしの先には白っぽい食べかすがつき、右手には黄みを帯びた松かさ。実をついばんでいる最中の一枚です。

ギンザンマシコのこと

• アトリ科の大型の鳥で、体長は20cmほど。太く短いくちばしが特徴です。
• オスは全身が赤く、メスは黄緑色です。写真の一羽はオスです。
• ハイマツの実をよく食べます。写真のように、松かさのそばで見かけることがあります。
• 北海道では大雪山系など、ハイマツの広がる高い山で見られます。
• 人をひどく恐れない鳥で、静かにしていれば近くで見られることもあります。

A male pine grosbeak sits among the needles of a Japanese stone pine, deep red through the head and breast with grey showing in the wing. There are pale crumbs on the tip of its short heavy bill, and a yellow-green cone sits on the branch beside it — it is in the middle of working at the seeds.

Pine grosbeaks are large finches, around 20cm, with that thick blunt bill built for cones. Males are red; females are olive-yellow. In Hokkaido they are birds of the high mountains where the stone pine grows, including the Daisetsuzan range. They are not especially shy, and will sometimes let you watch from close by if you keep still.
