倒木の上でエゾリスが後ろ足だけで立ち上がり、前足で小さなものを持って口もとへ運んでいます。背中は灰褐色、お腹は白く、太い尾がうしろで大きくふくらんでいます。足もとは落ちた松葉と苔、背景は緑から黄へとぼけていて、森に葉のある季節の光です。

エゾリスのこと

• 後ろ足で立ち、前足を手のように使って食べ物を持ちます。この写真の姿勢がまさにそれです。
• 背中は灰色がかった褐色、お腹は白。境目がはっきり分かれているのが横から見るとよくわかります。
• 太い尾は木の上を走るときのバランスと、休むときの防寒を兼ねています。
• 冬眠せず一年じゅう活動し、秋のうちに木の実を土や樹皮のすき間に隠して蓄えます。

Squirrels use their forepaws like hands, which is why this pose is so familiar. They stay active all year rather than hibernating, and spend the autumn hiding nuts in the soil and in gaps in the bark to get through winter.
