雪を掘った穴から、キタキツネが顔だけを出してまっすぐこちらを見ています。左右には肩の高さまで雪の壁が立ち、白にはさまれた中で赤みのある毛と黒く縁どられた耳が浮かび上がります。やわらかく回り込む光がひげの一本一本まで照らしていて、真冬の、音のない一瞬です。
キタキツネのこと
- 耳の裏と縁が黒いのは北海道のキツネに共通する特徴で、この写真でも左右の耳先がはっきり黒く見えます。
- 冬は毛が厚く伸びて顔まわりがふっくらします。頬から喉にかけての白い毛の量は、夏とはまるで違います。
- 雪を掘るのは、雪の下にいるネズミの気配を探っているときの動きでもあります。
- 冬眠はせず、北海道全域で一年じゅう活動しています。

A red fox has dug a hollow in deep snow and looks straight into the lens from inside it. Only the head and a little of the chest show. Walls of white rise on both sides, shoulder-high, and against them the rust-coloured coat and the black-rimmed ears stand out sharply.
The light is soft and even, the kind that comes with overcast winter sky, and it picks out every whisker. Nothing is happening. That is the whole point of the picture.
Hokkaido's foxes have black backs to their ears and a thick winter coat that fills out the face — the white fur from cheek to throat is far heavier now than in summer. They do not hibernate. Digging like this is often how they listen for voles moving under the snow.
