白っぽい地衣類におおわれた地面に、エゾナキウサギが体を丸めて座っています。まわりの低い木の葉は深い赤に色づき、すきまにまだ緑が残っています。耳は小さくまるく、灰褐色の体は周囲の地面の色によくなじんでいます。秋の高山の一枚です。

エゾナキウサギのこと

• 体長は15cmほど。ウサギの仲間ですが、耳は写真のように小さく丸い形をしています。
• 氷期の生き残りといわれ、大雪山系など寒い高山の岩場にのみ残って暮らしています。
• 冬眠しません。夏のあいだに草を刈って乾かし、岩のすきまに蓄えて冬を越します。
• 「ピチッ」という高い声で鳴きます。名前はこの声からきています。
• 北海道の天然記念物に指定されています。

An Ezo pika sits hunched on pale lichen-covered ground, ringed by low shrubs whose leaves have turned deep red with a little green still showing between them. Its ears are small and round and its grey-brown coat blends straight into the ground around it. This is autumn, high on the mountain.

Ezo pika are about 15cm long and live only in the cold rocky ground of Hokkaido's high mountains, where they have hung on since the last ice age. They do not hibernate — through the summer they cut grass, dry it, and store it in the gaps between rocks to live on through the winter. The name comes from their call, a high sharp note. They are a designated natural monument in Hokkaido.
