About the Ezo Red Fox

  • Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes schrencki. It is an endemic subspecies widely distributed from all over Hokkaido to Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
  • It is a medium-sized carnivore weighing around 4-6 kg, characterized by black fur on its ears and limbs. It inhabits a wide range of environments from grasslands to alpine zones.
  • It mainly eats voles, rabbits, wild birds, and insects, but also exhibits omnivorous tendencies, eating fruits and nuts in autumn.
  • It tends to be most active in the evening, often foraging during sunset.
  • In Ainu culture, it has been a subject of stories since ancient times as a cultural symbol with multiple names such as "cironnup" and "sumari."

About the Photographer

Hazuki Hirai — Born in Aichi Prefecture, currently residing in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. In February 2017, she became interested in the world of photography after being captivated by the snowy scenery of Kyoto. In September of the same year, when she visited Hokkaido alone for photography, she was fascinated by the rich natural landscapes and the wild animals powerfully living in the harsh environment, deciding to move there in December 2018. She primarily photographs natural landscapes and wild animals, providing her works to various media such as Digital Camera Magazine. She also produces official sample photos for Sony α series and actively participates in exhibitions such as the Tokyo Camera Club Photo Exhibition and her solo exhibition "Color of Northlandscape" at Sony Store Sapporo.

This work depicts an Ezo red fox bathed in the Hokkaido sunset. It delicately portrays the presence of wildlife living in a tranquil twilight through light and shadow.
