About the White Ezo Squirrel

  • Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris orientis - A Hokkaido subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel. Body length approximately 20cm, extending to about 30cm including the tail.
  • Extremely rare color variation (Leucism) - While typical individuals have a brown back, this white individual is an extremely rare variation due to a lack of melanin pigment. The birth rate of white individuals in the wild is estimated to be less than 1%.
  • Phantom beauty known as the "Forest Fairy" - Encountering one in nature is almost impossible. Its ethereal white fur is a miracle created by Hokkaido's nature.
  • Survival strategy in winter forests - In autumn, they hide large quantities of walnuts and pine cones in tree hollows for food, preparing to endure the harsh winter.
  • Symbol of nature conservation - The existence of white individuals strongly symbolizes the value of biodiversity conservation.
