About the Hokkaido Fox
- Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes schrencki, an endemic subspecies widely distributed throughout Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. It is a medium-sized carnivore weighing around 4-6 kg, characterized by black fur on its ears and limbs.
- Although relatively inactive during the day, it is known to nap in safe places, especially resting in its den during the day after nocturnal activities. Opportunities to photograph such vulnerable moments are extremely rare.
- It primarily feeds on voles, rabbits, wild birds, and insects, but also exhibits omnivorous behavior in autumn, eating fruits and nuts. It mainly forages at night, spending the daytime digging burrows or resting.
- It gives birth from spring to early summer, and the kits become independent from their parents in autumn. During the rearing period, parent foxes show increased activity and more active foraging behavior.
- It is a cultural symbol with multiple names from the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido, such as "cironnup" and "sumari." Its wisdom and cunning have long been subjects of stories and held an important place in hunting culture.
