About the Ural Owl

  • Scientific name: Strix uralensis japonica - A subspecies of owl endemic to Hokkaido, widely distributed across the Eurasian continent. It measures approximately 50 cm in length with a wingspan of about 110 cm, characterized by whiter plumage than the subspecies found on Honshu.
  • Habitat - Resides as a resident bird throughout Hokkaido, from plains to mountainous areas, in mixed coniferous and deciduous broadleaf forests, utilizing tree hollows as nesting sites.
  • Astonishing Hearing - Nocturnal with excellent hearing, capable of detecting mice under the snow. Its facial disc (circular feathers that gather sound) and asymmetrical ears accurately pinpoint sound direction.
  • Silent Flight - Achieves silent flight thanks to special flight feathers. This quiet technology has also been applied to noise reduction measures for the Shinkansen.
  • Connection to Ainu Culture - Referred to as "Kunneruk Kamuy" (god who cries at night) or "Iso-sanke Kamuy" (god who bestows prey), it has been revered as a messenger of the forest.
