PIKA Autumn Nest (057)
About the Pika
- It is an endemic subspecies found only in Hokkaido, inhabiting rocky areas in alpine zones above 800m, such as the Daisetsuzan Mountains and Hidaka Mountains.
- It does not hibernate, and from summer to autumn, it collects plant leaves and stems in rock crevices, preparing them as winter food reserves.
- It prefers cool climates and is an animal of cold regions, with an optimal temperature of around 12°C.
- As its name "Naki Usagi" (crying rabbit) suggests, it communicates with its peers using high-pitched calls like "Kii" and "Pyu".
- It is a valuable wild animal designated as Near Threatened on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
