About Brown Bears

• Scientific name: Ursus arctos yesoensis - Japan's largest terrestrial mammal; males weigh 150-400kg (record high 480kg), and females 100-200kg.
• Supreme Deity in Ainu Culture - Given the highest divine status as "Kimun Kamuy (God of the Mountains)" and worshipped in the Iyomante ritual.
• Autumn's Bounty - Autumn's salmon run is a vital food source before hibernation, with bears especially favoring fatty roe (ikura).
• Hibernation and Birth - Hibernate in tree hollows and rock caves from around November, with mother bears giving birth during hibernation. Cubs become independent in their second summer.
• Residents of Daisetsuzan - Daisetsuzan National Park is one of the world's highest-density brown bear habitats, where they primarily feed on alpine plants, roots, and nuts.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue - Wildlife photographer born in Sapporo in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, his work "Fox Chase" earned him the first-place title in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR," making him the first Japanese recipient. He appeared on "Jōnetsu Tairiku" in 2017. His books include "Romantic Forest: Animals of the Fairy Tale Forest" and "Letters from the North Country."
