About the Elm Tree

  • Toyokoro Town's Famous Tree — This famous elm tree in Horo-oka, Toyokoro Town, Tokachi Region, Hokkaido, is estimated to be 150 years old. It is actually a rare specimen formed by two trees that merged over many years to create a beautiful fan-like shape, standing side-by-side like lovers who have pledged eternal love. It has been designated as a cultural property of Toyokoro Town and is the town's symbol, also featured on its country signs.
  • A Tree that Heralds the Arrival of Spring — The elm tree (Harunire), meaning "spring-coming tree," is known in Hokkaido for blooming before its leaves appear from April to May, heralding the arrival of spring.
  • Adapted to Harsh Environments — It endures the harsh winters of Hokkaido, where snow accumulates to over 2 meters, waiting for the arrival of spring. It is a robust tree adapted to cold climates, and its vitality symbolizes the strength of life in nature.
  • Seasonal Expressions — The elm tree, showing different expressions through spring, summer, autumn, and winter, is also popular as a photography spot. Especially in a winter snowscape, its intricately branched limbs and deep-colored bark stand out beautifully.

About the Photographer

Hazuki Hirai — Born in Aichi Prefecture, residing in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. In February 2017, she became interested in the world of photography after being captivated by the snowy scenery of Kyoto. In September of the same year, while visiting Hokkaido alone for photography, she was enchanted by the landscapes woven by abundant nature and the wild animals living robustly in the harsh environment, deciding to move there in December 2018. She primarily photographs natural landscapes and wildlife, contributing her work to numerous media, including Digital Camera Magazine. She also produces official sample images for the Sony α series and actively participates in exhibitions such as the Tokyo Camera Club Photo Exhibition and her solo exhibition "Color of Northlandscape" at Sony Store Sapporo.

The elm tree stands strong even in deep snow. In the harsh winter environment of Hokkaido, the vitality and beauty of this tree are striking. The snow-covered branches are like works of natural art, and I captured a moment of silence as if time had stopped.
