About the Ezo Red Fox

The "Ezo Red Fox" is a representative wild animal of Hokkaido. Larger than the Honshu red fox, its winter coat is fluffy and shines a beautiful orange.

• Inhabits all of Hokkaido: Weighs 4-7kg, larger than red foxes on Honshu. Its thick fur helps it endure the extreme cold in winter.
• Child-rearing: Gives birth to 4-6 kits from spring to early summer. They become independent and solitary in autumn.
• Master Hunter: Omnivorous, eating various things such as mice, insects, and fruits. Famous for its "diving hunt" in winter, catching prey under the snow.
• Symbol of Hokkaido: Its sight running across the snowy fields is an iconic winter landscape of Hokkaido, captivating many people.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue – National Geographic Award-winning Wildlife Photographer

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, his work "Fox Chase," featuring Ezo red foxes, won 1st place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2016," making him the first Japanese person to achieve this honor.
