About the Ezo Deer

  • Scientific name: Cervus nippon yesoensis - A subspecies of Sika deer endemic to Hokkaido. They are large for deer, with mature males sometimes reaching over 180-200 kg in autumn and winter.
  • Foraging in snow - Even when covered in snow in the cold regions of Hokkaido, they remain active searching for food such as bamboo grass, surviving the harsh winter.
  • Seasonal migration of living areas - In winter, they move to coniferous forests with less snow at medium altitudes (200-400m), and in summer, they expand their range to high-altitude alpine areas.
  • Diverse diet - From spring to autumn, they eat herbs and tree leaves; in autumn, nuts (such as acorns); and in winter, tree bark and bamboo grass, adapting their diet to available food each season.
  • Iconic wildlife of Hokkaido - An important component of Hokkaido's ecosystem, their struggle for survival in a harsh natural environment symbolizes the brilliance of life.
