About the Ezo Squirrel

  • Subspecies endemic to Hokkaido - The Ezo squirrel (Ezo Risu) is a subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel, found only in Hokkaido. Unlike chipmunks, it has no stripes on its body, and distinctive tufts of fur grow on its ears in winter.
  • Physical Characteristics - Body length approximately 22-27cm, tail length approximately 17-20cm. Its fur changes from brownish in summer to grayish-brown in winter, and its fluffy tail and adorable appearance are popular.
  • Spring Activities - It does not hibernate and is active all year round, but is particularly active in spring. It can be seen digging up cached walnuts and acorns, and eating new buds.
  • Habitat - Prefers coniferous and mixed forests, living mainly in trees. It builds spherical nests in tree hollows or between branches.
  • Interaction with Humans - It can be easily observed in the forests and parks of Hokkaido and is loved by many for its endearing appearance.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue - Born in Sapporo in 1979, currently resides in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, he became the first Japanese person to win 1st place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2016". In 2017, he appeared on TBS's "Jounetsu Tairiku". His books include "Romantic Forest ~ Animals of the Fairy Tale Forest", "Look at me!", and "follow me Fuyu no Kitsune".

In this work, where the entire landscape is enveloped in Hokkaido's spring colors, the endearing expressions of the Ezo squirrels, frolicking like children amidst the gentle hues of the dogtooth violet and false anemone, are striking. It is a masterpiece that meticulously observes the natural ecology of wild animals and brings out their charm to the fullest.
