About Diamond Dust

"Diamond dust" - A mysterious natural phenomenon seen in Hokkaido during the severe winter months.

  • Conditions for occurrence: Occurs on clear, windless mornings when temperatures are below -15 degrees Celsius. Water vapor in the air forms tiny ice crystals.
  • Origin of the name: Named for how it sparkles like scattered diamond powder when illuminated by sunlight.
  • Observation sites: Often observed in inland areas of Hokkaido, especially in Higashikawa Town and Biei Town, it is also known as "angel's whispers."
  • Difficulty of photography: Capturing this moment in a photograph requires the perseverance of waiting from before dawn in extreme cold.
