About Lake Shikotsu

• A caldera lake formed by volcanic activity approximately 40,000 years ago. With a maximum depth of 363m, it is the second deepest lake in Japan, after Lake Tazawa.
• A remarkably clear lake that has been ranked No. 1 in Japan for water quality by the Ministry of the Environment for 11 consecutive years. Its mystical blue color is known as "Lake Shikotsu Blue."
• The lake, with a circumference of approximately 40km, is located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park and is surrounded by volcanoes such as Mt. Eniwa, Mt. Fuppushi, and Mt. Tarumae.
• Due to its great depth and large volume of water, it is the northernmost non-freezing lake in Japan, remaining unfrozen even in winter. It is the source of the Chitose River and holds abundant water.
• Easily accessible, approximately 40 minutes by car from New Chitose Airport. Activities such as canoeing and diving, which allow you to experience the lake's beauty, are also popular.

About the Photographer

Yoshihiro Abiko — Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1989. Became passionate about photography after moving to Chitose City, Hokkaido in 2016. Struck by the magnificent scenery that appeared before him on his first drive to Lake Shikotsu, he picked up a camera. He continues to express the grandeur of nature and the wild animals thriving within it with beautiful light, and was selected as one of Tokyo Camera Club's Top 10 Photographers of 2019. He currently resides in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido, and is also active as an official Sony photographer.

Lake Shikotsu is the origin of Abiko's career as a photographer, and a special place that inspired him to pick up a camera.
