About the Ezo Momonga (Siberian Flying Squirrel)

• This nocturnal small animal is endemic to Hokkaido, with an adorable palm-sized appearance, measuring 15-16cm in length and weighing 80-120g.
• It glides by spreading its patagium, a membrane between its front and hind limbs, allowing it to travel more than 30m from tree to tree.
• Its scientific name is Pteromys volans orii, and it was described in 1921 by Nagamichi Kuroda as a subspecies of the Siberian flying squirrel.
• It is primarily nocturnal, using tree hollows such as old woodpecker nests as its den, and remains active year-round without hibernating.
• It is an omnivore with a plant-based diet, eating tree buds, leaves, bark, seeds, and pine cones, and inhabits Hokkaido's forest ecosystem.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a ward nurse, she photographs Hokkaido's wild animals on her days off and after night shifts. She has received international awards, including 2nd place in the Sony World Photography Award National Award (Japan) in 2017 and a finalist in the Big Picture Nature World Photography Competition Terrestrial Wildlife category. She strives to capture works that convey the animals' beautiful fur and eyes, adorable gestures and expressions, and the cycle of life. She has published photo books "Pirika" and "Kamuy".
