About the Ezo Red Fox (Kitakitsune)

• The Ezo Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes schrencki) is a Hokkaido subspecies of the red fox, which is widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. It inhabits a wide range of areas in Hokkaido, from plains to alpine zones.
• Its head-body length is 60-80cm, and its tail length is 37-44cm. Its fur is reddish-brown with a white belly. Its distinctive features include black fur behind the ears and on the ankles of all four limbs, and a white tail tip.
• In winter, it is covered in thick fur and remains active even in the snow. Its sight of walking across snowy fields and jumping to catch prey symbolizes winter in Hokkaido.
• It is omnivorous, primarily eating small mammals such as voles. In winter, it distinguishes sounds beneath the snow and dives headfirst into the snow to catch its prey.
• The Ainu people called it "Chironnupu" (the one we seek), and its fur was highly prized.

About the Photographer

Yoshihiro Abiko — Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1989. He became passionate about photography after moving to Chitose City, Hokkaido, in 2016. He was deeply moved by the magnificent scenery that unfolded before him at Lake Shikotsu during his first drive, which led him to pick up a camera. He continues to express the grand natural landscapes and the wild animals bravely living within nature with beautiful light, earning him a spot in the "Tokyo Camera Club 10 Selections 2019." He currently resides in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido, and is active as an official Sony photographer. He is scheduled to fully launch his career as a freelance photographer from 2026.
