About the Blakiston's Fish Owl

• It is an endemic Japanese species, a large raptor found only in Hokkaido.
• It measures about 70-80 cm in length, and its most distinctive feature is the disc-shaped face around its eyes.
• It primarily preys on fish in rivers and has excellent night vision, making it active in nocturnal hunting.
• It is known to spend its entire life with the same mate, and the calls of the pair are said to be very beautiful.
• Once distributed throughout Japan, it is now a valuable wild animal found only in Hokkaido.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a nurse in hospital wards, she photographs Hokkaido's wild animals on her days off and after night shifts. She started photography in 2013 and within just a few years, she has won numerous awards in domestic and international photo contests, including 2nd place in the National Awards (Japan) at the "Sony World Photography Awards 2017". She has published photo books such as "Pirka" and "Kamuy," capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and vital activities of animals.
