About the Ezo Squirrel

The "Ezo Squirrel" is found only in Hokkaido. It is a Hokkaido subspecies of the Eurasian Red Squirrel, characterized by its fluffy tail and adorable appearance.

• Subspecies endemic to Hokkaido: Scientific name Sciurus vulgaris orientis. Body length approximately 25cm, tail length approximately 20cm. In winter, long tufts of hair grow on the tips of its ears.
• Master Hoarder: In autumn, it stuffs nuts and walnuts into its cheek pouches and stores them in multiple locations. It remains active even in winter.
• Excellent Senses: It has highly developed eyesight and hearing, allowing it to quickly detect danger.
• Seasonal Changes: It has wonderfully adapted its life cycle to the harsh seasonal changes of Hokkaido.

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, he won 1st place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2016," becoming the first Japanese person to do so.
