About the Ezo Red Fox

• Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes schrencki, an endemic subspecies widely distributed throughout Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands.
• It is surprisingly curious, cautiously approaching and exploring new things and unfamiliar environments.
• Characterized by agile movements and quick reactions, it adjusts its activity according to seasonal changes.
• It gives birth from spring to early summer, and the kits become independent from their parents in autumn.
• It is a cultural symbol with multiple names from the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, such as "cironnup" and "sumari."

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, in 1986. While working as a ward nurse, she photographs Hokkaido's wild animals after night shifts and on holidays. Starting photography in 2013, in just a few years she won numerous domestic and international photography contests, including 2nd place in the National Awards (Japan) at the "Sony World Photography Awards 2017." She has published photo books "Pirka" and "Kamuy," capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and vital activities of animals.
