About the Ezo Deer

• This is the largest subspecies of Japanese deer endemic to Hokkaido, with males reaching 90-140kg and females 70-100kg.
• Their fur color changes with the seasons; it is brown in summer and grayish-brown in winter.
• Males shed their antlers annually in April-May, and magnificent antlers grow back around September.
• They live in herds, and during the mating season in October-November, males form harems.
• They are distributed throughout Hokkaido and can migrate over 100km seasonally.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a nurse in a hospital ward, she photographs Hokkaido's wildlife on her days off and after night shifts. She started photography in 2013 and in just a few years, she has won numerous domestic and international photography contests, including 2nd place in the Sony World Photography Awards 2017 National Award (Japan). She has published photo books "Pirka" and "Kamuy", capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and vital activities of animals.
