About the Blakiston's Fish Owl

  • It is the largest owl in Japan, with a wingspan of approximately 180cm. Known as the "fish-eating owl," it has a globally rare ecology.
  • It is a national natural monument that inhabits only Hokkaido and is protected as an endangered species (approximately 165 birds). It is a sacred creature called "Kotankor Kamuy (God that protects the village)" in Ainu language.
  • Pairs spend their entire lives together and raise their young for over two years until they fledge. Chicks are covered in fluffy white down and are characterized by their large eyes.
  • Mainly preys on fish such as salmon, trout, and sculpin in rivers and lakes at night. It hunts in a unique way, flying just above the water's surface and catching fish with its feet.
  • Its numbers have drastically decreased due to habitat loss and river modification, but they are gradually recovering thanks to conservation efforts.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. She is an animal photographer who takes photos of Hokkaido's wildlife on her days off and after night shifts while working as a ward nurse. She has received international awards, including 2nd place in the Sony World Photography Award National Award (Japan) in 2017 and a finalist in the Big Picture Nature World Photography Competition Terrestrial Life category. She strives to create works that convey the beautiful fur and eyes of animals, their adorable gestures and expressions, and the vitality of life. She has published photo books "Pirika" and "Kamuy."
