About the Ezo Red Fox

  • The Ezo Red Fox is a Hokkaido subspecies of the red fox, which is widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Its scientific name is Vulpes vulpes schrencki. It inhabits a wide range of areas across Hokkaido, from plains to alpine zones.
  • Its head and body length measures 60-80cm, and its tail length is 37-44cm. Its fur is reddish-brown with a white belly. A distinctive feature is the black fur behind its ears and on the ankles of all four legs, and a white tip on its tail.
  • It is an omnivore, primarily feeding on small mammals such as voles, but also consumes birds, insects, and fruits.
  • On average, 3-6 kits are born in the warm spring, and the young become independent around autumn.
  • Young females born in the previous year may remain in the den and act as "helpers," assisting their parents in raising the next year's litter.

About the Photographer

Hazuki Hirai — Born in Aichi Prefecture, currently residing in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. In February 2017, she became interested in photography after being captivated by the snowy landscapes of Kyoto. In September of the same year, during a solo visit to Hokkaido for photography, she was enchanted by the rich, natural scenery and the wild animals bravely surviving in the harsh environment, leading her to decide to move there in December 2018. She primarily photographs natural landscapes and wild animals, contributing her work to numerous media outlets such as Digital Camera Magazine. She also produces official sample works for the Sony α series and is actively involved in exhibitions such as the Tokyo Camera Club Photo Exhibition and her solo exhibition "Color of Northlandscape" at the Sony Store Sapporo.

She delicately expresses the beauty of Hokkaido's nature and the life of its wildlife through the daily lives of Ezo Red Fox families.
