枯れ草の原に立つ古い切り株の先に、コミミズクが一羽とまっています。胸から腹は淡い地に褐色の斑、顔は白っぽく、目のまわりだけが黒く縁どられ、その中の黄色い目がまっすぐこちらを向いています。まわりには大きな雪片が舞い、背景は茶色くぼけた草原。降りしきる雪の中の一瞬です。
コミミズクのこと
- 目は黄色で、そのまわりが黒く隈取られています。この写真でいちばん目を引くのがその部分です。
- 名前の由来の耳羽はごく短く、ふだんは伏せられていて外からは見えません。ここでも立っていません。
- 森よりも開けた草原や湿地を好み、低い切り株や杭にとまって地面を見張ります。
- フクロウの仲間では珍しく、夕方だけでなく日中に活動する姿も見られます。

A short-eared owl sits on the tip of a weathered stump in a field of dry grass. Its breast is pale and heavily spotted with brown, its face is whitish, and the yellow eyes sit inside two dark patches that make them impossible to look away from.
Big flakes of snow are falling all around it. The grassland behind has gone soft and brown. It is simply sitting there, watching, while the weather comes down.
The "short ears" of the name are tiny tufts that stay flat most of the time — they are not raised here. Unlike most owls, this one prefers open grassland and marsh to forest, perching low on stumps and posts to watch the ground, and it will hunt in daylight as well as at dusk.
