About Aoiike (Blue Pond)

• Aoiike is an artificial pond that was accidentally created as a result of a check dam built on the Biei River to protect Biei Town from the volcanic mudflows caused by the 1988 eruption of Mount Tokachi.
• Its distinctive cobalt blue color is created when aluminum-rich water flowing from Shirogane Onsen mixes with the water of the Biei River, forming colloidal aluminum hydroxide.
• The larch trees standing dead in the water create an ethereal scene, resembling a painting. It was even featured as an Apple wallpaper.
• It shows different expressions with each season, and the night illumination in winter creates a particularly magical atmosphere.
• As a famous tourist spot proudly representing Biei Town, it continues to attract many visitors from both Japan and abroad.

About the Photographer

Tomohiro Tsuboi — A photographer from Okayama Prefecture, residing in Biei Town, Hokkaido. He was captivated by the landscapes created by Hokkaido's vast land during a work transfer, which led him to start landscape photography. Particularly drawn to the hill scenery of Biei Town, he decided to move there with his family in September 2022. Operating a farm under the name "Farmers on the Hill" while also working as a photography guide, he shares the charm of the Biei and Kamifurano areas. He also holds a vegetable sommelier qualification and has won over 70 photo contests. He serves as a director of the NPO Biei Town Photography and Video Association.
