About the Ezo Squirrel

• Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris orientis - A Hokkaido subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel. Endemic to Hokkaido and inhabits coniferous forests.
• Winter attire - From autumn, it grows a thick, warm winter coat, and its ear tufts also grow long, providing increased insulation against the cold.
• Agile movements on snow - The beautiful line of its tail extending backward allows it to run across the snow at speeds exceeding 30km/h.
• Winter diet - In winter, its activity in trees increases as it searches for and eats food stored in autumn.
• "Swimming" in the snow - Its movements, leaping through deep snow, resemble swimming through a sea of snow.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue - Born in Sapporo in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. A wildlife photographer. In 2016, he became the first Japanese person to win 1st place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR" with "Fox Chase." He appeared on "Jounetsu Tairiku" in 2017. His books include "Romantic Forest: Animals of the Fairy Tale Forest" and "Letter from the North Country."
