About the Ezo Squirrel

• Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris orientis - A Hokkaido subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel, widely distributed in Hokkaido's coniferous forests.
• Autumn Attire - In autumn, their fur becomes particularly vibrant, and they are often seen carrying and eating nuts.
• Amazing Leaping Ability - With excellent eyesight, they can freely jump from tree to tree at a distance. They can move at speeds of over 30 km/h.
• Omnivorous Diet - They eat a variety of foods including seeds, tree bark, and mushrooms, and store food for winter.
• Rapidly Growing Young - Young squirrels grow quickly, reaching adult size in just a few months.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue - Born in Sapporo in 1979, he is a wildlife photographer residing in Higashikawa Town. In 2016, his work "Fox Chase" won first place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR," making him the first Japanese to achieve this. In 2017, he appeared on "Jounetsu Tairiku." His books include "Romantic Forest: Animals of the Fairytale Forest" and "Letters from the North."
