Mutual Love (023)
About the Blakiston's Fish Owl
"Sōshi Sōai" (Mutual Love) is a precious photo capturing a pair of Blakiston's Fish Owls, Hokkaido's rarest bird. Blakiston's Fish Owls are one of the world's largest owls, measuring 70cm in length and with a wingspan of 180cm. They are an endangered species, with an estimated 140 individuals living only in Hokkaido, Japan. Once they mate, they stay together for life, and are known as "fish-eating owls" because their main diet consists of river fish. They have been cherished since ancient times, called "Kotan Kor Kamuy" (God who protects the village) in Ainu language.
