About the White Ezo Squirrel

• Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris orientis - A Hokkaido subspecies of the Eurasian red squirrel. Body length approximately 20cm, extending to approximately 30cm including the tail.
• Extremely rare color variation (leucism) - While normal individuals have brown backs, this white individual is an extremely rare variation caused by a lack of melanin pigment. The birth rate of white individuals in the wild is estimated to be less than 1%.
• "Forest Fairy" - A Phantom Beauty - Encountering one in the wild is almost impossible. Its ethereal white fur is a miracle created by Hokkaido's nature.
• Arboreal Dweller - Inhabits deciduous broadleaf forests and larch forests. It is active from spring to autumn, stockpiling nuts in preparation for winter.
• Symbol of Nature Conservation - Due to habitat loss, the distribution of the population is limited. The existence of white individuals strongly symbolizes the value of biodiversity conservation.

About the Photographer

Hiroki Inoue - Born in Sapporo in 1979, currently residing in Higashikawa Town. A wildlife photographer. In 2016, his work "Fox Chase" won first place in the Nature category of National Geographic's "TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR," making him the first Japanese to achieve this. He appeared on "Jounetsu Tairiku" in 2017. His books include "Romantic Forest: Animals of the Fairytale Forest" and "Letters from the North."
