About Ezo Deer

  • Scientifically known as Cervus nippon yesoensis, they are a distinct subspecies, larger than the Japanese sika deer (Honshu sika deer). Mature males can weigh over 200kg in autumn.
  • Their antlers can reach up to approximately 1.1m, making them known as the subspecies with the most magnificent antlers among deer. Males fight fiercely during the mating season from autumn to winter.
  • They tend to be nocturnal, actively foraging in the early morning and evening. Their silhouettes against the sunset are beautiful.
  • In winter, they stay in coniferous forests at middle elevations with less snowfall, and in summer, they migrate to higher elevation areas.
  • They are called "Yuku" by the Ainu people and are culturally significant as a primary hunting target.

About the Photographer

Hazuki Hirai — Born in Aichi Prefecture, currently residing in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. In February 2017, she was captivated by the snowscapes of Kyoto and became interested in the world of photography. In September of the same year, while visiting Hokkaido alone for photography, she was mesmerized by the rich natural landscapes and the wild animals living powerfully in the harsh environment, deciding to move there in December 2018. She primarily photographs natural landscapes and wild animals, contributing her work to numerous media outlets such as Digital Camera Magazine. She also produces official example photos for the Sony α series and is actively involved in exhibitions such as the Tokyo Camera Club Photo Exhibition and her solo exhibition "Color of Northlandscape" at Sony Store Sapporo.
