Friendly Siberian Flying Squirrels (079)
About the Ezo Momonga
The Ezo momonga, known as the "spirit of the snowy forest." This photo captures a precious scene of two of them snuggling up together.
- Hokkaido Endemic Species: A species of flying squirrel in the squirrel family. Body length 14-20cm, weight 100-120g. Characterized by large eyes, fluffy fur, a gray back, and a white belly.
- Friendly Behavior: In winter, multiple flying squirrels may huddle together in the same burrow to keep warm. During the breeding season (February-June), it's common to see two of them acting together.
- Gliding Ability: They spread the membrane between their front and hind legs and glide like a glider from tree to tree in a "banning" pose. They can fly over 100m!
- Nocturnal: They become active from evening. Their large eyes give them excellent night vision, allowing them to fly freely in dark forests.
- Protected Animal in Hokkaido: Designated as a prefectural natural monument and protected.
