Pika (040)
About the Pika
The Ezo Pika is a survivor of the Ice Age. It is a small rabbit-like mammal, about 15cm long, that lives only in the rocky areas (scree slopes) of the Daisetsuzan mountain range. Its name comes from its high-pitched "pich!" cry. It does not hibernate, but instead collects hay during the summer and stores it in rock crevices. Its habitat is shrinking due to climate change, and it is designated as a natural monument of Hokkaido.
