Ezo flying squirrel gliding (063)
About the Ezo Momonga (Siberian Flying Squirrel)
Known as the "flying ninja," this flying squirrel is endemic to Hokkaido. Its silent gliding through the night forest truly makes it a spirit of the snowy woods.
- Hokkaido Endemic Species: A member of the squirrel family, genus Pteromys. Measures 14-20 cm in body length, weighs 100-120g. Characterized by large eyes, fluffy fur, a gray back, and a white belly.
- Gliding Ability: Spreads the patagium between its front and hind legs, and glides like a hang glider from tree to tree in a "bamboo-copter" pose. Can fly over 100m!
- Nocturnal: Becomes active from dusk. Its large eyes provide excellent night vision, allowing it to move freely even in dark forests.
- Arboreal Life: Mostly lives in trees, nesting in tree hollows. Also uses old woodpecker nests.
- Protected Animal of Hokkaido: Designated and protected as a natural monument of the prefecture.
