About the Ezo Chipmunk

• The Ezo chipmunk is a small squirrel native to Hokkaido, measuring about 15cm to 20cm in length.
• In autumn, before hibernation, they have a habit of stuffing large amounts of food into their cheek pouches and carrying it back to their nests.
• They are characterized by five black stripes on their backs and are widely loved for their adorable appearance.
• They are arboreal creatures and prefer to eat seeds such as pine cones and corn.
• As a symbol of Hokkaido's autumn and winter, their cute appearance is loved by many people.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido in 1986. While working as a nurse, she photographs Hokkaido's wild animals on her days off and after night shifts. She started photography in 2013 and in just a few years, she has won numerous awards in national and international photography contests, including 2nd place in the Sony World Photography Awards 2017 National Award (Japan). She has published photo books "Pirka" and "Kamuy," capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and life cycle of animals.
