About the Blakiston's Fish Owl

• The Blakiston's Fish Owl is one of the world's largest owls, measuring about 70 cm in length, and is an endangered species native to Hokkaido.
• It has long been revered by the Ainu people as "Kotankoro Kamuy," meaning "god of the village."
• Currently, only about 170 individuals have been confirmed, and as they are nocturnal, sightings during the day are extremely rare.
• Characterized by large yellow eyes and a stern expression, it is known as a silent hunter.
• It is a representative wild bird of Hokkaido's winter forests and a symbolic presence for nature conservation.

About the Photographer

Natsumi Handa - Born in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, in 1986. While working as a nurse, she photographs Hokkaido's wildlife after night shifts or on holidays. Starting photography in 2013, in just a few years she won numerous awards in domestic and international photography contests, including 2nd place in the National Awards (Japan) at the "Sony World Photography Awards 2017." She has published photo books such as "Pirka" and "Kamuy," capturing the beautiful fur, adorable expressions, and vital activities of animals.
